Benchmark Survey 2026
Industry insights from UK zoos and wildlife attractions
The Zoo & Wildlife Attraction Benchmark Survey 2026 provides a snapshot of the priorities, pressures and strategic direction of the UK sector, based on responses from organisations across the BIAZA network and wider industry.
The findings show a sector that remains ambitious and mission-driven, but is operating in an increasingly demanding environment shaped by rising operating costs, weather volatility, changing visitor behaviour and the need to improve commercial performance.
The UK Zoo & Wildlife Attraction Benchmark Survey 2026 was conducted in February 2026 with responses from organisations across the UK zoo and wildlife attraction sector. The report was commissioned by n-gage.io as part of its ongoing work supporting visitor attraction operators internationally.
Across the survey, several themes emerge clearly:
- Cost pressure is the dominant operational challenge
- Revenue per visitor is now a strategic priority
- Visitor journey friction remains widespread
- Digital capability is active but not fully mature
- Events, memberships and experiences are growing in importance
- Capacity, not demand, is often the limiting factor
The report is intended to provide useful context for operators, senior leaders and stakeholders across the sector.

Why this report matters
Zoos and wildlife attractions operate in one of the most complex parts of the visitor economy. Organisations must balance conservation, education, animal welfare and public value while also delivering a high-quality visitor experience and maintaining financial sustainability.
Many attractions operate across large outdoor estates with seasonal trading patterns, high fixed costs and significant regulatory obligations. This makes the operating model very different from most other leisure sectors, and means that changes in cost, weather, visitor behaviour or staffing can have a disproportionate impact.
The Benchmark Survey was created to provide an industry-wide view of how organisations are responding to these realities. Rather than focusing on individual case studies, the report brings together responses from across the sector to highlight common challenges, shared priorities and emerging trends.
The results suggest the sector is becoming more strategically sophisticated, with increasing focus on yield, loyalty, experience quality and operational resilience rather than visitor numbers alone.
With continued support from the industry, it is hoped this survey will become an annual benchmark, allowing the sector to track how priorities evolve over time.
